A traditional Turkish dessert featuring layers of filo pastry filled with chopped pistachios and drenched in sweet orange blossom syrup.
Ingredients
- 500 grams filo pastry
- 200 grams unsalted butter
- 200 grams pistachios
- 200 grams sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 250 millilitres water
- 250 grams sugar
- 2 tablespoons orange blossom water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Melt the butter and set aside.
- In a bowl, mix chopped pistachios, sugar, and cinnamon.
- Lay out a sheet of filo pastry on a work surface. Brush with melted butter. Repeat with 8 more sheets, stacking them on top of each other and brushing each with butter.
- Spread half of the pistachio mixture evenly over the stacked filo sheets.
- Repeat with another 9 sheets of filo pastry, brushing each with butter, then top with the remaining pistachio mixture.
- Finish with 9 more sheets of filo pastry, brushing each with butter.
- Cut the baklava into diamond shapes. Place on a baking tray and bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown.
- While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine water and sugar. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in orange blossom water and lemon juice.
- Once the baklava is done, pour the warm syrup over it. Allow it to cool before serving.
