Healthy Whole Wheat Crackers and Brands

Published by Doug Cook at 12:21 am under Healthy Eating

It can be difficult in the world of bad card and good cards. In a life where infinite food choices can have disastrous or beneficial results. Every second something new comes up that you just have to add to your diet, or simply stop eating all together. The single biggest complaint is snacking, and this is true for the folks who have a habit of breaking into the potato chip bag and goes to town. If you aim to eat a few healthier snacks and in moderation, you’ll probably just fine. Of course the problem is find those great, healthy snacks. Other than just fruits or veges, there are a number of whole wheat crackers out on the market, all claiming to be healthier versions of their less than healthy counterparts. We’ll review a few of them here.

4. Carr’s Whole Wheat Crackers. These crackers are a joke because their really aren’t that much whole wheat anything in these crackers. A serving (17 grams) is worth 80 calories but almost 40% of them are fats and there is very little dietary fiber to speak of. Overall, there are better options if you are looking for a healthy whole wheat cracker.

3. Zesta Whole Wheat Crackers. Keebler’s entry into this contest isn’t a bad one despite being next to the Carr’s brand. They have a serving (15 grams) set at 60 calories with less than a quarter of those coming from fats.  There is 1 gram of dietary fiber per serving which is reasonable for the number of calories. The only problem is the high amount of calories in the product, which is 230 mg per serving or over 10% of daily consumption. If you’re the kind that likes to add salt to foods I’d avoid this cracker for your health’s sack.

2. Ritz Whole Wheat Crackers. Whole wheat version of Ritz crackers are actually surprising a fairly good snack as well.  They’re not quite as good for you as the number 1 cracker but they’re certainly close. A serving (16 grams) will net about 70 calories with 23 calories coming from fats.

1. Triscuits. Nabisco’s Triscuits are by far and away the best whole grain crackers out there. Six crackers (28 grams) lead to about 120 calories and contributes about 3 grams of dietary fiber. A majority of these calories also come from carbohydrates rather than fat, which is a good sign when investigating whole wheat products. Another great aspect of Triscuits is that they come in multiple flavors, so it’s not just eating some plain cracker.

To be honest there aren’t that many quality whole wheat crackers on the market. There are many whose packaging may claim to have wheat or multi-grains but these are often crafty marketing ploys to snag consumers. Remember to look to at the food label for whole grain ingredients when checking out foods.
