Healthy Cottage Cheese Snacks and Ideas
Cottage cheese is an interesting food to use for a snack if for no other reason it doesn’t appear to be the most popular dairy product in the world. It seems to be an acquired taste for most folks and those not a common food type. Regardless, people are finding that low-fat cottage cheese is a nice nutritious dairy product that can be used in a variety of applications and can be a yummy snack for many. This post is going to look at a few different ideas and snacks that you can potentially come up with.
Fruit is the most common compliment to cottage cheese. Things like freshly picked strawberries, blueberries, huckleberries or any other kinds of berries for that matter are great to combo with the cheese leading to a very quick, healthy snack. While having many different vitamins and minerals, this combo may be a little sugary for some so keep that in mind.
Another nice, easy idea is the use of an avocado to balance the healthy aspects of cottage cheese. One half of an avocado and a couple ounces of cottage cheese will provide a quality 200 calorie snack with about 7 grams of fiber and 10 grams of protein. Keep in mind avocados are high in fat, so don’t go overboard with them. You’ll be fine with a half of one though as it will only be about 16 grams of it, with only about 3 of it being saturated.
Lastly, cottage cheese can go well with nuts and seed-based foods. In other words adding some walnuts, flax-seeds, almonds or sunflower seeds to the mix will not only balance out the macro-nutrient mix of the snack but also adds many nutrients people are commonly missing such as Vitamin E and Omega-3s. This is a great way to get these vital nutrients.
